Space, Military Justice, and the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 2050

In his latest article in The Space Review, INSS Senior Fellow on Space Strategy and Policy Todd Pennington examines trends in Air Force JAG Corps legal missions with a view toward anticipating the JAG Corps of 2050. Mr. Pennington describes a probable decline in the military justice practice, as policy choices about jurisdiction and a long-term downward trend in military justice actions lead to a smaller, niche, probably centralized military justice mission in the future. However, he notes that the need for legal support to space operations is growing as fast as the space missions themselves. This demand signal will probably drive the formation of a Space Force JAG Corps by 2050, probably as a realignment of the Air Force JAG Corps people and offices currently supporting Space Force missions.
