INSS joins ASU Webinar to Discuss Ethical Frontiers of BCIs in Military Contexts

By Dr. James Giordano Arizona State University

On 2 April, Dr. James Giordano participated in the webinar "CYBORGUARDIANS: Ethical Frontiers of BCIs in Military Contexts," hosted by Arizona State University. The webinar focused on Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs)—technologies that connect the brain to machines—and examine their ethical, strategic, and policy implications for warfighters, society, and warfare.

There are growing considerations of using current and emerging neurotechnology to develop brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aimed at optimizing performance of the joint warfighter. In this lecture, Dr James Giordano described the state and trajectory of these developments and their most probable military applications, discusses the effects and implications of BCI technologies for the joint warfighter and warfighting; explains key technical, operational and ethical issues of such uses, and proposes recommendations for the Joint Force to remain apace of technological progress and ahead of peer-competitor and adversarial engagements in this space.
