Naval power: American shipbuilding capacity and competition with China

By Dr. T.X. Hammes Defense Priorities

Defense Priorities hosted a distinguished panel of experts to discuss the reality of American shipbuilding and naval competition with China.

The challenges faced by the U.S. shipbuilding industry stand in contrast to China, which is accelerating its production of advanced warships and submarines. What happened to U.S. naval shipbuilding capacity? Should the United States be concerned it cannot keep pace with China's shipbuilding output? Can investing more in cheaper, asymmetric surface and undersea capabilities offset U.S. shortfalls in the production of large warships and carriers? What other changes, if any, would ensure that gaps in the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base do not compromise U.S. foreign policy goals?

T. X. Hammes, Distinguished Research Fellow in the INSS Center for Strategic and Military Power, was a part of the panel.
