About the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS)

Director:  Dr. Denise Natali

The Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) is the dedicated research component at the National Defense University (NDU). INSS supports the joint warfighter through cutting edge research, analyses, and wargaming exercises on priority national security issues.

INSS research focuses on five priority programs: 1) Critical Threats; 2) Defense Industrial Base; 3) Future Warfare; 4) Homeland Defense; and 5) Military Allies. 

Programs


Critical Threats Program

Provides DoW stakeholders with research and analysis on the United States’ most dangerous and highest priority state adversaries - China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran - and U.S. efforts to deter and/or defeat these adversaries on the battlefield across conventional, nuclear, cyber, and hybrid domains.

Focus Areas: Strategic deterrence, strategies and capabilities of China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.


Defense Industrial Base Program

Provides DoW stakeholders with research and analysis on U.S. defense capabilities and partnerships, focusing on efforts to strengthen the U.S defense industrial base.

Focus Areas: Industrial surge capacity and mobilization planning, industrial integration with U.S. allies and partners.


Future Warfare Program

Provides DoW stakeholders with research and analysis on emerging disruptive technologies and operational concepts that shape the future of U.S. military power and warfare.

Focus Areas: Disruptive technologies, cognitive warfare, non-kinetic engagement, autonomous and semi-autonomous weapons systems, weapons of mass destruction.


Homeland Defense Program

Provides DoW stakeholders with research and analysis on defense strategies and policies to protect the U.S. from external threats and aggression against its territory, population, and critical infrastructure.

Focus Areas: Missile defense, border security, cyber security, transnational criminal organizations, strategic deterrence, and U.S. defense capabilities.


Military Alliances Program

Provided DoW stakeholders with research and analysis on efforts to strengthen U.S. military alliances and partnerships across priority regions.

Focus Areas: Allied military capabilities and readiness, burden-sharing mechanisms across coalitions, defense partnerships.

INSS Centers

INSS also includes the Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs, Center for Strategic Deterrence and Weapons of Mass Destruction Studies, NDU Press, and Office of Human Research Protections.


Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs

The Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs serves as a national focal point and resource center for research and analytic exchanges on the national goals and strategic posture of the People’s Republic of China and the ability of that nation to develop, field, and deploy an effective military instrument in support of its national strategic objectives.


Center for Strategic Deterrence and Weapons of Mass Destruction Studies

The Center for Strategic Deterrence and Weapons of Mass Destruction Studies provides expertise, research, analyses, and policy support on the full range of issues related to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and their potential use, from strategic deterrence to countering WMD activities. CSWMD maintains extensive partnerships with government agencies, academic institutions, and international organizations to advance knowledge and understanding of WMD and their implications for national security.

National Defense University Press

Through its publications, the National Defense University Press provides a forum for discussion, debate, and innovative solutions that contribute to shaping the national security discourse and preparing the next generation of national security leaders. NDU Press publishes Joint Force Quarterly, INSS Strategic Perspectives, INSS Strategic Forum, books and edited volumes, policy briefs, and monographs on topics related to national security, defense policy, and military strategy.
