CSWMD Moderates Side Session at UN General Assembly First Committee

By Sarah Gamberini

In support of the State Department Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence and Stability, Chemical and Biological Weapons Affairs Office, NDU INSS Center for the Study of WMD (CSWMD Senior Policy Fellow) Sarah Gamberini moderated a side session during the United Nations General Assembly First Committee.

This session on Chemical Weapons Disinformation: Current and Future Challenges, co-hosted by the United States and European Union, was the fourth iteration of Information Resilience and Chemical Weapons sessions conducted by CSWMD, the first three held in The Hague and Brussels, and Lagos, Nigeria. The session in New York was opened by Assistant Secretary of State Mallory Stewart and attended by United Nations representatives from 18 countries.

The panel’s goals were to provide attendees a better understanding of the complex and contested information environment and offer insights into the threat of false and manipulated information to arms control norms, including those against chemical weapons, and finally, to offer countermeasures to build information resilience. The session was supported by INSS CSWMD Paul David-Justus.
