About the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS)

Director:  Dr. Laura J. Junor

INSS conducts research in support of the academic and leader development programs at the National Defense University, provides strategic support to the Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and unified combatant commands, and engages with the broader national security community in the service of the common defense.

INSS Centers and Components

The Institute for National Strategic Studies serves as the principal focus for research at NDU and is composed of three centers and two components.

Center for Strategic Research

CSR provides advice to the Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and combatant commands through studies, reports, briefings, and memorandums; conducts directed research and analysis in the areas of strategic and regional studies; and engages in independent and leading-edge research and analysis in related areas.

CSCMA serves as a national focal point and resource center for multidisciplinary research and analytic exchanges on the national goals and strategic posture of the People’s Republic of China and the ability of that nation to develop, field, and deploy an effective military instrument in support of its national strategic objectives.

NDU Press

NDU Press is the University’s cross-component, professional military and academic publishing house. Program on Irregular Warfare and Special Operations Studies

The Program on Irregular Warfare and Special Operations Studies is an initiative by Naval Special Warfare and the Institute for National Strategic Studies. The purpose of the Program is to strengthen the relationship between academic research and Special Operations Forces, with the intent of developing human capital, applying non-traditional processes and analytic methodology to current problem sets.
